Visiting: Temple of Artemis, Ephesus, House of Virgin Mary, Basilica of St. John

Duration: 6 hours

Experience some of the Christian faith's most sacred sights on this day tour around Selcuk. As you depart Çeşme Harbour, look for your guide who will be holding a name placard for easy recognition, ready to transport you to Selcuk.

Ephesus Temple of Artemis
The day begins at the Temple of Artemis which dates back to the 6th century BC and is listed as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Today the ruins of its marble columns, scattered across the swamp land and beautifully preserved, give you a sense of the temple's grandeur and what was once there. It is one of the region's oldest relics, once part of the large Roman city of Ephesus. Wander through the Temple of Hadrian, the Temple of Domitian and the large theater where St Paul is believed to have once preached, as well as the meticulously reconstructed Celsius Library whose facade is adorned in ornate carvings.

House of the Virgin Mary
Not far from Ephesus lies The House of the Virgin Mary - a small stone cottage where it is believed the Mother Mary spent the last years of her life after John the Baptist bought her there. It is now a site of pilgrimage for people of all religions who come to pay their respects and pray for good fortune.

Basilica of St. John
In the center of Selcuk lies the Basilica of St John, dating back to 565 AD and once one of the most sacred churches of its time. Although little is known about the church, it is believed that a tomb within its foundations is the tomb of St John himself.

NOTE!
While a visit to the Terrace Houses section, located within the ancient ruins of Ephesus, is not included in the price of the tour (extra entrance fee of 15 USD per person), it is highly recommended. Its oldest building, "The houses of the rich Romans", dates back to the 1st century BC and offers a unique insight into the lives of the wealthy who once lived there, including beautiful frescoes and mosaics. With more than 100 stairs within this section, we unfortunately do not recommend it for people with physical disabilities. Allow a minimum of 30 minutes to visit.
